Preparing Your Boat for Off-Season Storage
Georgia winters are mild, but a boat that sits for months still needs some prep. A little work before it goes into storage can save you a frustrating first trip of the season. Always check your owner’s manual and engine manufacturer’s guidance first. They’re the final word for your specific boat.
Clean it inside and out
Wash the hull and deck, and remove any dirt or plant growth from the lake. Clean out food, drinks, and trash so you don’t invite pests. Dry out the bilge and storage compartments to help prevent mildew.
Take care of the fuel
Fuel that sits for months can break down. Many boaters fill the tank and add a fuel stabilizer, then run the engine briefly so the treated fuel reaches the system. Follow your engine manufacturer’s recommendation.
Look after the engine
Change the oil and filter if it’s due, and flush outboards with fresh water. If you’re not comfortable with engine prep, a qualified technician can handle it. We offer outboard maintenance and can help.
Battery and electronics
Disconnect the battery, or remove it and keep it on a maintainer. Take portable electronics and valuables home with you.
Cover it and secure the trailer
A well-fitted cover keeps out sun, rain, and leaves. Check trailer tire pressure and consider chocking the wheels. If you’d rather keep weather off it entirely, ask about covered spaces at our Advantage Drive and Kelly Mill Road locations.
Pick a secure place to store it
Gated storage with 24/7 access and security cameras means you can check on your boat whenever you like. Find a location near you.
