How to Choose the Right Size Storage Space for Your Boat or RV
Picking a storage space sounds simple until you realize the number on your boat’s registration isn’t the number that matters. Here’s how to measure so the space you rent actually fits.
Measure overall length, not hull length
A boat’s advertised length usually describes the hull alone. What you need is the overall length as it sits on the trailer, measured from the tip of the trailer tongue to the farthest point at the back, which is often the lower unit of the outboard or a swim platform.
For RVs and campers, measure from the front bumper to the rear-most point, including any ladder, bike rack, or spare tire mount.
Add a little breathing room
Leave a couple of feet of margin. Extra space makes it easier to back in, walk around the vehicle, and open compartments without bumping a neighbor. If your measurement lands right at the edge of one size, the next size up usually saves frustration.
Don’t forget width
Most boat trailers and RVs fit comfortably in a standard-width space, but check if you have a wide-beam boat, slide-outs you might extend, or mirrors that stick out.
